Aryna Sabalenka: 2024 WTA Player of the Year and Dominant Force in Women’s Tennis
Aryna Sabalenka’s exceptional 2024 season has earned her the prestigious WTA Player of the Year award, marking the first time she has received this honor. The 26-year-old Belarusian’s incredible achievements throughout the year, including winning two Grand Slam titles, have firmly established her as one of the top forces in women’s tennis. Sabalenka not only finished the year at No. 1 in the WTA rankings but also had a remarkable 56-14 record, capturing four titles and reaching seven finals in 2024.
Sabalenka’s stellar season was highlighted by her defending her Australian Open title, which she won for the second consecutive year, and lifting her first US Open trophy. In addition to these monumental Grand Slam victories, she triumphed at two WTA 1000 events, claiming titles in Cincinnati and Wuhan. Her dominance on the court was not limited to Grand Slams, as she solidified her position as the world No. 1 in October, reclaiming the top spot from Iga Świątek, and held onto it throughout the remainder of the year.
Notably, Sabalenka’s season included her fourth consecutive appearance at the WTA Finals, a testament to her consistency at the highest level of the sport. Despite fierce competition from other top contenders such as Iga Świątek, Coco Gauff, Jasmine Paolini, and Zheng Qinwen, Sabalenka emerged as the unanimous choice for the Player of the Year, as voted by tennis media.
While Sabalenka stole the spotlight with her individual achievements, other players were also recognized for their outstanding performances. The doubles team of Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini was honored, especially for their triumph in winning the gold medal in doubles at the Paris Olympics, a historic victory for Italy. Paolini also had a standout season, reaching two major finals at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, and helping Italy secure a Billie Jean King Cup title, their first since 2013. Their collaborative efforts and contributions to Italian tennis were highly celebrated in 2024.
Paula Badosa was another player honored this year, being named Comeback Player of the Year after overcoming a career-threatening back injury. Badosa made a remarkable recovery, climbing back into the Top 15 and winning a WTA 500 event in Washington, D.C. She also reached the US Open quarterfinals and demonstrated resilience and determination throughout the season.
Emma Navarro was named the Most Improved Player of the Year following an extraordinary season. The American’s breakout year saw her reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals and the US Open semifinals, where she defeated Badosa in a remarkable run. Navarro’s rise from outside the Top 50 to the Top 10 in the rankings was a significant achievement, and she also won her first career title in 2024.
Lulu Sun was honored as the Newcomer of the Year, a well-deserved recognition for her meteoric rise in 2024. Sun, who started the year ranked outside the Top 200, soared to a career-high No. 39. Her standout moments included a Wimbledon quarterfinal appearance and a runner-up finish in Monterrey, where she made history as the first New Zealand woman to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals in the Open Era.
In summary, 2024 was a year of immense growth and achievement in women’s tennis. Aryna Sabalenka’s dominance and resilience made her the standout performer of the year, earning her the WTA Player of the Year title. Alongside her, other players such as Paola Badosa, Emma Navarro, and Lulu Sun also showcased remarkable talent, cementing their place in tennis history. This season truly belonged to the players who demonstrated exceptional skill, perseverance, and the heart to push the boundaries of the sport.
