Boxing, Family, and Destiny: The Rise of Steven Navarro

In the gritty world of boxing, where every punch counts and champions are forged through blood, sweat, and tears, the story of Steven Navarro shines bright. At just 20 years old, Steven is stepping into the spotlight, backed by a powerful family legacy and fueled by a drive that’s hard to ignore. His journey isn’t just about boxing; it’s about family, resilience, and the twists of fate that brought him here.

A Tough Daily Grind

For Refugio “Cuco” Navarro, Steven’s dad, the day starts before the sun even peeks over the horizon. After saying goodbye to his kids, Cuco heads to his job as a machinist in Long Beach, California, putting in 10 to 12-hour days. Once he clocks out, he barely has a moment to breathe before driving to Wild Card Boxing in Hollywood, where he trains alongside assistant Marvin Somodio. This relentless routine showcases Cuco’s dedication—not just to his own boxing history but to Steven’s future as well.

Cuco, a former boxer, comes from a family steeped in boxing greatness. His brother Carlos Navarro once defeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. at the US Pan Am trials, and several of his nephews have made waves in both amateur and pro boxing. Yet Cuco jokes about being “the worst of them,” a bit of humble bragging that downplays his contributions. Despite the family pressure, Cuco initially didn’t want Steven to step into the ring, fearing the dangers that come with it.

Finding His Own Way

Steven’s journey into boxing wasn’t as simple as you might think. While Cuco was hesitant, a visit to a Muay Thai gym changed everything for Steven. “I got my mom to take me,” he recalls, admitting that training in Muay Thai was more about connecting with his dad than his own desire to fight. As he trained, Steven saw his dad becoming sober, which made a world of difference. “That was the only time I saw my father sober,” he says.

Cuco’s battle with addiction was tough. He opens up about his darkest days, how he hit rock bottom and almost lost everything. “I was just roaming the streets,” he admits. But when Steven expressed his desire to box, it reignited Cuco’s passion for the sport and pushed him to confront his past. Their bond grew stronger as Steven stepped into the ring for the first time, showcasing a natural talent that left Cuco beaming with pride. “After that day, it was game over,” he says.

Now, with a record of 4-0 (3 KOs), Steven isn’t just another name in the ring; he’s making a name for himself. He understands the weight of his family’s legacy, but he’s focused on carving out his own path. “I was already making noise as an amateur,” he states, confident in his ability to become a world champion one day.

A Strong Support System

Steven’s success isn’t just about his talent; it’s about the team around him. Enter London Papamichael, his strength and conditioning coach, who understands what it means to grow up without a consistent father figure. His story resonates deeply with Steven, as they both share a connection born from tough life experiences. “Every single person on my team has a crazy backstory,” Steven reflects, highlighting the unique dynamics that fuel their drive.

As Steven gears up for his next fight on December 7 against Gabriel Bernardi in Phoenix, he feels a sense of destiny. “Somehow, our paths crossed, and we all have the same drive,” he shares, recognizing the significance of the relationships he’s built along the way.

In a sport where every punch can change a career, Steven Navarro represents hope, determination, and the power of family. With each fight, he moves closer to his dream of becoming a world champion. His story is a reminder that with hard work, resilience, and the support of loved ones, anything is possible. As he steps into the ring, he’s not just fighting for himself—he’s fighting for his family, his past, and the bright future that awaits him.
