Carlos Alcaraz Criticized for Lacking a ‘Plan B’ by Former Top 10 Star

Carlos Alcaraz, hailed as one of tennis’s brightest stars, has faced sharp criticism for his inconsistency during the 2024 season. Former WTA player and current commentator Andrea Petkovic claims that the young Spaniard “lacks a Plan B” and struggles significantly when he’s not at his best.

Despite a year marked by remarkable successes, including his first French Open title and a triumphant Wimbledon title defense, Carlos Alcaraz also experienced several disappointing setbacks. Petkovic’s comments have added a new layer of scrutiny to the world No. 3’s approach to the game.

2024: A Year of Highs and Lows for Carlos Alcaraz

The 21-year-old tennis prodigy had a phenomenal start to the season, securing major victories at the Indian Wells Open, the China Open, and, most notably, his maiden French Open title. However, Alcaraz’s form proved to be inconsistent as the season unfolded.

One of the most shocking moments of his year came during the US Open when he was defeated in straight sets by Botic van de Zandschulp in the second round. This unexpected exit highlighted the gaps in Alcaraz’s ability to recover when his game falters.

The pattern repeated in other tournaments. Outside of Indian Wells, Alcaraz failed to reach the semifinals in any Masters 1000 event, losing to players such as Gael Monfils in Cincinnati and Ugo Humbert in Paris. These losses showcased a vulnerability that contrasts sharply with his dominance in peak form.

Andrea Petkovic’s Criticism: No Backup Plan

Speaking on The Rennae Stubbs Podcast, Andrea Petkovic didn’t hold back in her assessment of Alcaraz. Comparing him to world No. 1 Jannik Sinner and No. 2 Alexander Zverev, she remarked that Alcaraz lacks the adaptability these players demonstrate during challenging matches.

“The only issue I have with Carlos is what others seem to avoid,” Petkovic said: “When Carlos is bad, he’s truly terrible. He has no Plan B. Players like Zverev, Sinner, and even Taylor Fritz can still manage to find a way. Novak Djokovic certainly does. But when Alcaraz isn’t playing well, it’s like he loses everything—double faults, missed shots, no rallies. It’s shocking.”

Petkovic pointed out the disparity between Alcaraz’s best and worst performances.“At his peak, Carlos is probably the best player in the world. He won 3-0 against Jannik Sinner, who has had an incredible season. But at his worst, he could lose to someone like Jakub Mensik, which Sinner probably wouldn’t.”

Eyes Set on 2025 and a Historic Milestone

As the 2024 season wraps up, Carlos Alcaraz is setting his sights on making history in 2025. With four Grand Slam titles already to his name, a victory at the Australian Open would cement his legacy.

Such a win would not only mark his fifth Grand Slam title but also make him the youngest player in history to complete a Career Grand Slam. If Alcaraz accomplishes this feat, he will surpass Rafael Nadal’s record of 24 years and three months, set during the 2010 US Open.

What Lies Ahead for Carlos Alcaraz

While the criticism from figures like Andrea Petkovic highlights areas for growth, it also underscores the immense potential of Carlos Alcaraz. His ability to dominate at his best is undeniable, but addressing his inconsistencies and developing a “Plan B” will be critical as he continues to chase greatness.

As 2025 approaches, fans and critics alike are eager to see whether the young Spaniard can rise to the challenge and solidify his place as one of tennis’s all-time greats.
