2025: A Defining Year for Daniel Dubois
After the question marks, savage insults, and unfair doubts over his bottle and bravery, Dubois shut up all the doubters and haters in 2024.
After being handed the IBF heavyweight belt when Oleksandr Usyk vacated the title, Dubois defended it in spectacular style by dismantling Anthony Joshua on a September evening that was meant to be the re-crowning of AJ as a world champion.
Instead, it is Dubois who enters 2025 on top of the world, seeking an undisputed bout with Usyk.
Although, he must first beat the experienced, dangerous Joseph Parker on February 22, live on DAZN PPV, to have any chance of facing Usyk for a second time.
If you have not followed “Dynamite’s” career to date, here is everything you need to know about the explosive British heavyweight.
A Promising Start
Born on September 6, 1997, in London, Daniel Dubois showed early promise as a boxer.
Standing 6’5” with an imposing reach, he quickly became a dominant force in the amateur boxing scene.
He reportedly had over 70 amateur fights, gaining valuable experience before turning pro at the age of just 19.
Rapid Ascent in the Professional Ranks
Dubois burst onto the professional scene in April 2017, defeating Marcus Kelly via a first-round knockout.
His knockout power became his signature, and he built an impressive record by dispatching opponents with ease.
By his 15th fight, Dubois had won the British, Commonwealth, WBC Silver, and WBO International heavyweight titles.
The First Setback: Joe Joyce
In November 2020, Dubois faced Joe Joyce in a highly anticipated clash of British heavyweights.
Despite starting strongly, Dubois suffered a devastating injury — a fractured orbital bone (the eye socket) — forcing him to take a knee in the 10th round and lose via stoppage.
Critics questioned his resilience, but Dubois used the experience as motivation to come back stronger.
Redemption and Title Success
Dubois returned to winning ways in 2021, defeating Bogdan Dinu to claim the WBA interim heavyweight title.
He followed it up with dominant victories over Joe Cusumano and Trevor Bryan, solidifying his position as a top contender.
His win over Bryan earned him the WBA ‘regular’ heavyweight belt, further bolstering his credentials.
Dubois vs. Usyk: The First Encounter
Dubois faced Oleksandr Usyk in 2023 in a unification bout. While Dubois showed heart and determination, Usyk’s technical brilliance proved too much, and the Ukrainian emerged victorious, handing Dubois his second-ever defeat.
The key moment was a powerful blow to Usyk’s midriff, knocking down the Ukrainian. The referee deemed it a low blow rather than a knockdown, giving Usyk extra time to recover and go on to win the fight.
However, Dubois remains adamant that he learned valuable lessons from the fight and is eager for a rematch.
The IBF Title
Dubois holds the IBF heavyweight belt, the only major title that Usyk does not currently possess.
This makes a rematch between the two not only a chance for Dubois to avenge his loss but also an opportunity for Usyk to again become the undisputed heavyweight champion.
The potential showdown promises to be a must-watch event. At just 27 years old, Daniel Dubois has time on his side. With a professional record of 22 wins (21 by knockout) and just two losses, he remains one of the most exciting fighters in the heavyweight division.
Dubois’ combination of power, size, and determination makes him a dangerous opponent for anyone, including Usyk.
As speculation builds over Dubois’ next move, fans can only hope for another thrilling chapter in his career.
Whether it’s a rematch with Usyk or another high-stakes bout, Daniel Dubois is poised to leave a lasting mark on heavyweight boxing.
