On September 10, 2023, Daniel Jones entered the field for the first game of his lucrative four-year, $160 million contract with the New York Giants, carrying high expectations. However, his tenure quickly unraveled, beginning with a disastrous 40-0 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. In that game, Jones faced relentless pressure, enduring 23 QB pressures and seven sacks, while the injury to Andrew Thomas further destabilized the offensive line and the team’s prospects.
The Giants’ struggles reflected Jones’ personal downturn. By November 24, 2024, the team released Jones, just 439 days after that Cowboys debacle. In the interim, Jones managed only 10 touchdown passes against 13 interceptions across 16 starts, leading to his benching in favor of Tommy DeVito.
Reflecting on his performance, Jones admitted, “This season has been deeply disappointing. I take full accountability for my shortcomings. I didn’t play well enough to deliver the results the team needed.”
Jones’ career in New York wasn’t without its highs. In 2022, he led the team to a playoff victory, finishing the year with a QBR of 62.9, one of the best in his career. However, injuries derailed his momentum. The 2023 season saw him sidelined with a neck injury and an ACL tear, preventing him from regaining his form. His QBR plummeted to a career-low 46.5, and rumors swirled about a strained relationship with head coach Brian Daboll.
Midway through the 2024 season, tensions between Jones and the coaching staff peaked. Notably, a botched flea-flicker against the Carolina Panthers in Germany exemplified the growing frustrations. By then, the Giants had shifted their focus to DeVito, effectively ending Jones’ run as the team’s starting quarterback.
Jones’ tenure with the Giants will be remembered as a rollercoaster of promise and disappointment. While he enjoyed moments of brilliance, his $160 million contract is now viewed as one of the worst deals in franchise history.
As the Giants move forward, Jones’ story serves as a cautionary tale about the volatility of quarterback investments in the NFL and the thin line between success and failure in the spotlight.
