Mercedes driver George Russell has revealed that many Formula 1 drivers are growing increasingly frustrated with the FIA, describing the current situation as “a bit fed up.” Russell, who also serves as the director of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA), made these remarks ahead of the highly anticipated Las Vegas GP this weekend.
Drivers Demand Greater Clarity from FIA
The tension stems from a recent GPDA public statement, which criticized FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem and called for better communication and transparency. This rare move followed the controversy in Brazil, where Max Verstappen received community service as punishment for using an expletive in a press conference.
The GPDA also questioned how the FIA utilizes fines collected from penalties, seeking more accountability in financial matters. Russell commented:
“There’s a lot of change happening at the FIA, and that instability has made it harder to implement the changes we’ve been asking for.”
Driver Frustrations Grow
Russell acknowledged that several drivers feel disconnected from the governing body, particularly due to inconsistent decision-making.
“Many of us feel the situation is heading in the wrong direction. We just want to ensure our voices are heard, and changes are made for the benefit of the sport.”
The GPDA’s statement is the first united stance by all 20 drivers since 2017, highlighting the growing disconnect between drivers and the FIA.
Leadership Changes Spark Concerns
The frustration has been compounded by the recent dismissal of Niels Wittich, F1’s race director, who stepped down after less than two years in the role. Reports suggest Wittich was effectively sacked, leaving drivers surprised by the abrupt decision.
Russell admitted:
“I had no idea this was coming. Some drivers weren’t happy with certain decisions, but firing someone isn’t always the solution. Sometimes, working together can improve the situation.”
The FIA has yet to respond to the GPDA’s concerns, but the drivers have made it clear they expect better collaboration moving forward.
Looking Ahead to Las Vegas GP
As the off-track drama continues, attention now shifts to the Las Vegas GP, with Russell and his fellow drivers eager to focus on racing. Despite the controversies, Russell remains optimistic that cooperation between the FIA and drivers can help steer the sport in the right direction.
