ARLINGTON, Texas – The challenges for the New York Giants continue to mount. After suffering their seventh consecutive loss, a 27-20 defeat to the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium, the team faces an additional blow: an injury to their defensive linchpin, Dexter Lawrence. The All-Pro defensive tackle revealed he dislocated his left elbow during the Thanksgiving matchup.
Lawrence exited the game in the third quarter and did not return. Speaking about the incident, he recounted, “I think I just dislocated my elbow!” to linebacker Bobby Okereke postgame. Lawrence, who leads the Giants with nine sacks this season, walked off the field with his elbow noticeably misaligned before heading to the locker room accompanied by trainers.
Injury Status and Next Steps
Lawrence’s elbow was heavily wrapped, and he donned a sling after the game. He is scheduled for an MRI in the coming days to assess the severity of the injury. However, no clear recovery timeline has been established by the medical staff.
With 10 days before their next game against the New Orleans Saints, the Giants (2-10) have a brief respite to allow injured players, including quarterback Tommy DeVito, to recover.
DeVito Eyes Return
DeVito missed the Thanksgiving matchup due to a forearm injury but expressed optimism about a swift recovery. Head coach Brian Daboll confirmed that an MRI conducted earlier in the week showed no structural damage.
“Structurally, everything’s fine,” DeVito assured reporters. “It was just too soon to be ready for Thursday. I’m feeling much better now. If it were Sunday, I think I could’ve played.”
DeVito served as the team’s emergency third-string quarterback during the game but did not participate in pregame warm-ups. Daboll hinted that DeVito “probably” would be available for the Saints matchup, though he stopped short of naming him the starter.
Drew Lock’s Struggles
In DeVito’s absence, Drew Lock got the start but faced significant struggles. Completing 21 of 32 passes for 178 yards, Lock recorded a rushing touchdown but also threw a pick-six and lost a fumble. While he led the team with 57 rushing yards, Lock’s six sacks and lack of consistency highlighted the team’s ongoing quarterback woes.
Daboll was noncommittal about Lock’s performance, stating: “Drew did some good things, but the turnovers were costly. You can’t have those.”
Offensive Struggles Persist
Despite managing to score 20 points – only the fourth time this season they’ve hit that mark – the Giants’ offense remains a work in progress. They mustered just 247 total yards, much of which came during garbage time in the fourth quarter. Lock endured 14 quarterback hits and six sacks, exposing a glaring need for offensive line stability.
The team’s quarterback carousel continues after cutting ties with Daniel Jones 11 days ago. DeVito and Lock have alternated starts in the interim, but the instability under center has contributed to the team’s struggles, with the Giants now having lost three straight games under three different starting quarterbacks.
A Season to Forget
The Giants’ last victory dates back to October 6 against the Seattle Seahawks. Since then, the team has faced injuries, offensive inconsistencies, and a lack of stability at key positions. With their season hanging by a thread, the upcoming game against the Saints provides a much-needed opportunity for redemption – but only if they can address these lingering issues.
