The Kirk Cousins era in Atlanta has hit a crossroads after a decision by head coach Raheem Morris to bench the veteran quarterback in favor of rookie Michael Penix Jr. With their playoff hopes on the line, the Falcons (7-7) had to make the difficult choice. Cousins had struggled significantly in recent games, posting a 1-9 touchdown-to-interception ratio over his last five starts, contributing to a string of disappointing losses. Though he had earlier led Atlanta to a 6-3 start, his form took a steep decline, especially during a four-game losing streak in November, where he threw eight interceptions and zero touchdowns.
Cousins, a professional through and through, accepted the decision with grace, acknowledging his inability to consistently play at the level expected of him. “It’s pro football,” Cousins said. “There’s a standard that I have for myself, that the team has for me. Unfortunately, I wasn’t playing up to that standard consistently enough.” His self-awareness and commitment to the team were evident, as he vowed to stay prepared, support Penix, and help the Falcons find a way to win in their final three games for a potential playoff spot.
When Cousins joined the Falcons in March on a four-year, $180 million deal, expectations were high. He delivered some impressive performances, including two victories over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but his inconsistency became glaring in the latter part of the season. His decision-making was frequently poor, throwing risky passes into tight coverage that led to turnovers and failed opportunities. His recent performance in a 15-9 victory against the Raiders encapsulated his struggles, where he threw just 112 yards with one touchdown and one interception, nearly giving up another turnover. If not for Bijan Robinson’s standout performance (22 carries for 125 yards), the Falcons could have lost.
Head coach Morris acknowledged the severity of the issue, stating, “We’ve got to play better at the position,” and felt that it was the right time to make a change. Cousins’ professionalism throughout the decision was widely recognized, as Morris praised him for his handling of the demotion, calling him “a pro” and a “great human.” Yet, Morris also emphasized the necessity of a change, recognizing the urgency of the Falcons’ playoff ambitions.
The decision to start Michael Penix Jr., the rookie quarterback selected eighth overall in the 2024 draft, creates a significant turning point for the Falcons. Penix was widely considered the most pro-ready quarterback in his draft class, and Morris believes the rookie gives them the best chance to succeed going forward. “We wanted to play a little better at quarterback,” Morris explained, expressing confidence that Penix can elevate the team’s play in these crucial final weeks.
While the future of Kirk Cousins in Atlanta remains uncertain, his career is far from over. He may have been benched, but he remains confident in his ability to play at a high level. “I didn’t forget how to play quarterback,” Cousins said, acknowledging his recent struggles but reaffirming his belief in his skills.
As the Falcons prepare for their final stretch, the question now shifts to whether Michael Penix Jr. can deliver on the confidence placed in him by the coaching staff. If he succeeds, it could mark the start of a new era in Atlanta, one that many didn’t foresee just a few months ago when Cousins was signed. For Cousins, though, the journey isn’t over. His next chapter, whether with the Falcons or elsewhere, will surely be one to watch.
