The New York Knicks have made a strategic move to bolster their backcourt depth by signing veteran guard Landry Shamet. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the deal brings Shamet back to the Knicks after a brief stint in the preseason.
Shamet had initially impressed during preseason games but suffered a dislocated shoulder, leading to his release. In a corresponding roster adjustment, the Knicks have waived forward Matt Ryan.
Shamet’s Comeback After Injury
Despite his injury setback, Shamet demonstrated resilience by working his way back through the Knicks’ G League affiliate, the Westchester Knicks. Over the past week, he averaged 11 points per game, proving he is ready to contribute at the NBA level once again.
Shamet’s return addresses the Knicks’ need for a versatile guard who can provide both offensive firepower and defensive stability. Before his injury, he was widely regarded as a lock to make the regular season roster, showcasing his potential as a key role player.
A Proven Performer in the NBA
A seven-year NBA veteran, Shamet entered the league as the 26th overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers. He was later traded to the Los Angeles Clippers during his rookie season and subsequently played for the Brooklyn Nets and Phoenix Suns before joining the Washington Wizards for the 2023-24 season.
Shamet has established himself as a reliable three-point shooter, boasting a career average of 8.7 points per game while shooting 38.5 percent from beyond the arc. Additionally, his ability to defend multiple positions enhances his value on both ends of the court.
Knicks’ Strong Position in the Eastern Conference
The Knicks currently sit in third place in the Eastern Conference with an 18-10 record. The team is riding a three-game winning streak and has been dominant on both ends of the floor. They rank seventh in offensive efficiency, averaging 116.5 points per game, and sixth in defensive efficiency, allowing just 109.4 points per game.
Adding Shamet strengthens an already solid lineup, providing depth and shooting consistency that can be crucial as the team looks to maintain its momentum.
Matt Ryan’s Departure
To make room for Shamet, the Knicks waived forward Matt Ryan, who had a limited role this season. Ryan appeared in nine games, averaging 1.7 points per game in restricted minutes.
Over his four-year NBA career, Ryan has played for multiple teams, including the Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers, Minnesota Timberwolves, and New Orleans Pelicans. While his contributions have been limited, Ryan remains a sharpshooter with the potential to find a new opportunity elsewhere.
Looking Ahead
The Knicks’ next game is against the struggling Toronto Raptors (7-21) on Monday, where Shamet could make his official return to NBA action. With Shamet’s addition, the Knicks aim to solidify their playoff push and maintain their position as one of the Eastern Conference’s top teams.
As the NBA season unfolds, Shamet’s performance will be closely monitored. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see if the Knicks’ latest acquisition can help propel the team to greater success.
