Lewis Hamilton believes a better qualifying session could have secured him victory at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, after a storming drive from 10th on the grid to finish second behind teammate George Russell.
Q3 Struggles Set the Stage for a Comeback
Hamilton’s Las Vegas weekend took a challenging turn during Friday’s qualifying session. A lock-up on his first flying lap in Q3 was followed by a track limits infringement on his second attempt, leaving the Mercedes star starting the race in 10th position.
Despite this setback, Hamilton delivered a stellar performance under the lights in Las Vegas, overtaking rivals from McLaren, Ferrari, and even World Champion Max Verstappen to claim second place.
Hamilton’s Post-Race Reflections
Reflecting on the race, Hamilton acknowledged the missed opportunity due to his qualifying error:
“If I’d done my job yesterday, it would have been a breeze today, but it’s okay. I had fun coming from the back, coming from 10th, and the team did a fantastic job.”
He praised the car’s performance, calling it the best he’s ever felt during the season:
“We don’t know why we were so quick this weekend, but that’s the best the car’s ever felt, so I’m grateful to have been a part of getting it to that point.”
A Nostalgic Drive Through the Pack
Hamilton compared his race to his early karting days at Rye House, highlighting the thrill of overtaking and climbing the field:
“I had a great time. When you’re progressing, moving forward, it’s always a great feeling. It felt very much like my old days at Rye House, like starting at the back and coming through, so it was great.”
On George Russell’s Victory
Hamilton was quick to congratulate his teammate George Russell, who led the team to a one-two finish:
“At the end of the day, George did a great job, did everything you’re supposed to do, and I’m happy for him. I’m just grateful I could get back up there to support the team with a one-two.”
Max Verstappen’s Championship Highlight
Hamilton also extended his congratulations to Max Verstappen, who clinched his fourth World Championship title during the weekend:
“Firstly, I’ve got to say a big congratulations to Max, winning the championship still with several races to go.”
Mercedes’ Performance in Las Vegas
The Las Vegas GP marked a significant moment for Mercedes, with both drivers showcasing strong pace. Hamilton’s recovery drive and Russell’s win underscore the team’s progress late in the 2024 F1 season.
