Max Verstappen has secured his fourth consecutive Formula 1 championship in style, finishing fifth at the Las Vegas Grand Prix. The 27-year-old Red Bull driver sealed the title with two races left in the season, beating McLaren’s Lando Norris in the standings.

Verstappen’s achievement places him among an elite group of drivers, becoming only the sixth in F1 history to win at least four championships. Reflecting on his accomplishment, Verstappen humbly noted, “When you’re growing up racing legendary drivers, it’s already impressive to be on the podium. Winning a championship—let alone four—is beyond what I thought possible.”

Las Vegas Drama and Redemption

The Las Vegas Grand Prix has undergone a transformation since its chaotic debut last year, which was marred by logistical issues and public outrage over traffic disruptions. This year, the event ran smoothly, delivering a race that thrilled fans.

Actor Sylvester Stallone waved the checkered flag as George Russell led a 1-2 finish for Mercedes, with Lewis Hamilton securing second place. This marked the first Mercedes sweep since 2022. Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz Jr. finished third, narrowly keeping the constructor championship battle alive between McLaren and Ferrari.

Verstappen, however, stole the spotlight. Starting fifth, he quickly advanced to second by the 10th lap, ensuring Norris never posed a significant challenge. After crossing the finish line, Verstappen expressed gratitude to his team: “Oh my God, what a season. Four times. Thank you, guys. We gave it all.”

Season Highlights and Challenges

Although Verstappen’s dominance is unquestionable, this season wasn’t without challenges. A mid-season winless streak from June until Brazil tested the team’s resilience. Despite this, Verstappen still managed eight wins, proving his consistency and adaptability.

Norris, who pushed Verstappen harder than any rival since 2021, acknowledged his competitor’s excellence: “Max just doesn’t have a weakness. With the best car, he dominates. Without it, he’s still always there.”

Red Bull celebrated Verstappen’s achievement, with team principal Christian Horner calling it “a phenomenal, phenomenal achievement.” Verstappen now matches Sebastian Vettel as a four-time champion for the team.

Constructors’ Championship and Future Outlook

The constructor championship remains undecided, with McLaren holding a slim 24-point lead over Ferrari heading into the Qatar Grand Prix. The final showdown is expected in Abu Dhabi next month.

Meanwhile, the Las Vegas race solidified its place as a marquee event in the F1 calendar. Drawing over 306,000 fans across three days, the event demonstrated F1’s growing popularity in the United States. With races in Miami, Austin, and Las Vegas, the U.S. boasts more F1 events than any other country.

Adding to the excitement, Formula 1 is set to expand its grid to 11 teams, making room for an American team backed by General Motors’ Cadillac brand. While the official announcement is expected soon, it was postponed to keep the spotlight on the Las Vegas Grand Prix.

A Season to Remember

Verstappen’s fourth title underscores his dominance and cements his legacy as one of the sport’s greats. As he celebrated with champagne in front of the iconic Bellagio fountains, Verstappen reflected on the season’s lessons: “This year taught me to stay calm under pressure. As a team, we handled it beautifully, making it a special and unforgettable season.”

The Formula 1 season continues in Qatar, with fans eagerly awaiting the final battles of 2024.
