Rising Stars Jakub Mensik and Shang Juncheng Nominated for 2024 ATP Newcomer of the Year Award

In a season full of impressive breakthroughs, two 19-year-olds have captured the spotlight in men’s tennis: Jakub Mensik and Shang Juncheng. Both have made remarkable strides in 2024, earning nominations for the coveted Newcomer of the Year award at the ATP Awards. This prestigious recognition is given to the player who has entered the Top 100 for the first time and made the biggest impact on the ATP Tour that year. As they prepare to close out their seasons at the Next Gen ATP Finals in Jeddah, their accomplishments highlight just how much potential they hold.

Jakub Mensik’s Breakthrough Season

Czech star Jakub Mensik has enjoyed a year of tremendous growth. His breakthrough came early in the season during the ATP Tour event in Doha, where he stunned tennis fans by reaching his first ATP Tour final. On his way to the final, Mensik defeated seasoned players such as Andy Murray, Andrey Rublev, and Gael Monfils, with his victory over World No. 5 Rublev marking a standout moment. This win made Mensik the youngest player to beat a Top 5 opponent since Carlos Alcaraz triumphed over Stefanos Tsitsipas at the 2021 US Open. Reflecting on the experience, Mensik said, “The [Doha] week will be unforgettable… it showed me I can play with these players and be soon on top.”

This run helped Mensik break into the Top 100 for the first time, a pivotal milestone in his career. Mensik’s momentum didn’t stop there. The Czech player went on to achieve his best Grand Slam result of the season by reaching the third round at the US Open, equaling his performance in 2023. The highlight of his fall season came with strong showings in Shanghai and Vienna, where he secured two more Top 10 victories and continued his ascent up the rankings. By October, Mensik had risen to World No. 48, securing his qualification for the Next Gen ATP Finals in Jeddah, a goal he had set for himself at the start of the season.

Shang Juncheng’s Historic Rise

Meanwhile, Shang Juncheng has also had a career-defining year. The Chinese teenager made history in Chengdu, where he became the first player from China to win an ATP Tour title on home soil. In the final, Shang triumphed over Lorenzo Musetti, claiming the victory in front of a passionate home crowd. “It’s really, really special for me, especially to do it at home,” Shang said, reflecting on his momentous win.

This success in Chengdu was just one highlight in a breakout season for Shang. Earlier in the year, he made waves in Hong Kong, reaching the semifinals to begin his campaign. He also earned a career-high ranking of World No. 47 in October, bolstered by his title in Chengdu and deep runs in Eastbourne and Atlanta. Shang continued to impress with a solid performance at the Rolex Shanghai Masters, where he faced Carlos Alcaraz in a thrilling second-round match. Throughout the season, Shang demonstrated his ability to perform on the biggest stages, notching four ATP Masters 1000 wins and making it to the third round at both the Australian Open and US Open.

As he heads to Jeddah for the Next Gen ATP Finals, Shang’s qualification is another historic achievement: he becomes the first Chinese player to qualify for this prestigious event. Shang has expressed his excitement about competing on such a high-profile stage, noting, “All the tennis spotlight is on you because there are only eight players.”

Looking to the Future

Both Mensik and Shang have made remarkable progress in 2024, with each player achieving personal milestones that bode well for their futures in tennis. Their nominations for Newcomer of the Year underscore their rapid rise through the ATP ranks and their potential to become the next stars of the sport. As they prepare to close their seasons in Jeddah, both are already thinking ahead to the opportunities that await them on the ATP Tour in 2025 and beyond. Whether Mensik or Shang takes home the award, there’s no doubt that these two young players are poised to make an even bigger impact in the years to come.
