The San Jose Sharks are shaking off a rough start to the 2024-25 NHL season and showing signs of progress, thanks in part to strong contributions from both seasoned veterans and emerging young talent. After beginning the season with a dismal 0-7-2 record, the team has rallied to post an impressive 10-7-3 record since October 26. This resurgence has been highlighted by a three-game winning streak and a stretch of four wins in five games.
Granlund Speaks on Team’s Growth
Key contributor Mikael Granlund credited the team’s recent improvements to a growing sense of confidence and cohesion.
“The way we play, that gives us a chance,” Granlund said after the team’s third consecutive win. “We’ve been getting better as a team throughout this season. At the beginning of the season, we were just behind in these games, and right now, we are playing way better. That gives us a chance, and that gives us the confidence—not only the results but the way we play.”
This marked improvement comes at a crucial time for the Sharks, as they continue their rebuilding phase, aiming to return to prominence in the NHL.
Building Blocks for a New Era
The Sharks have long been searching for tangible progress after hitting the reset button a few seasons ago. Following years of playoff disappointment and aging stars, the team opted for a rebuild. Now, the fruits of their efforts are starting to show.
The Sharks’ roster boasts promising young talents like William Eklund, who joined the team in 2023-24, along with Will Smith and Macklin Celebrini, two of the best prospects in hockey. While these rising stars are an exciting part of the team’s future, they aren’t carrying the load alone.
Veteran Contributions Fuel Success
Granlund, who joined the team in 2023-24, has rediscovered his form and become a critical piece of the Sharks’ lineup. He’s been joined by other experienced players, including Jake Walman, Cody Ceci, and Tyler Toffoli, who bring valuable leadership to the locker room. Additionally, goaltender MacKenzie Blackwood has elevated his game, providing much-needed stability between the pipes.
This balanced mix of youthful exuberance and veteran savvy has not only produced wins but also created a positive atmosphere throughout the organization.
Fun Amid the Grind
Beyond the results on the ice, the Sharks are rediscovering the joy of playing as a team. Tyler Toffoli emphasized the importance of camaraderie and energy within the group, even during tough stretches.
“I’ve said it from the start of the year, from training camp, it’s a lot of fun coming into the rink,” Toffoli shared. “There’s a lot of energy from top to bottom. Guys are having a lot of fun. And not saying that it’s necessarily a good thing, but even when we’re losing, we’re having fun and working. Definitely positives, and it’s good to be on a little streak right now.”
This sense of unity and resilience has been crucial in sustaining the team through challenges and building momentum as they approach the midway point of the season.
