Is Paige VanZant Done with MMA Forever?
The dynamic and ever-charismatic Paige VanZant has sparked a wave of speculation regarding her combat sports future. Known for her meteoric rise in the UFC and subsequent ventures into Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC) and Power Slap, VanZant has candidly opened up about the toll MMA has taken on her body. While she hasn’t entirely ruled out a return, fans may need to adjust their expectations.
“I don’t ever like to say I’m closing the door 100 percent,” VanZant revealed in an interview with MMA Junkie Radio. “But it would be hard for me to go back into MMA. Not because I don’t love it or lack passion, but I’ve broken my arm five times, with four fractures in two years.”
Her words underline the grueling nature of MMA and the sacrifices fighters endure for their craft. For VanZant, her decision is rooted in the desire to preserve her physical health and mental well-being.
Battling Through Pain and Resilience
Reflecting on her injuries, VanZant’s account is nothing short of harrowing.
“I’ve had two surgeries, and I still have a metal plate that runs the entire length of my forearm,” she said. “The thought of risking another break or surgery is daunting. I still love competing, but I’ve reached a point where I need to prioritize my health.”
The physical scars are accompanied by the mental toll of repeated setbacks. “The mental fortitude to push through those years was the hardest part. It was a really, really rough time.”
This candid reflection underscores her evolution from a fierce competitor to someone more mindful of the broader implications of her career choices.
Power Slap: A Fresh Chapter
VanZant’s current focus is on Power Slap, where she’s set to return at Power Slap 9 in Abu Dhabi on Oct. 24. While the sport’s premise of enduring defenseless blows might raise eyebrows, VanZant appreciates its reduced physical wear and tear compared to MMA or BKFC.
“My draw to Power Slap was simple,” VanZant explained. “I had just come out of a boxing match and was in shape. When they called, I thought, ‘Why not? It’s a new opportunity.’” Her excitement for this new chapter is palpable. “It’s a brand-new experience, and I absolutely loved it.”
Unlike MMA, Power Slap doesn’t involve the grind of grappling, which VanZant sees as a benefit. Though the sport comes with its risks, it allows her to keep competing without overburdening her body.
A Fight-by-Fight Adventure
Currently signed to Power Slap on a fight-by-fight basis, VanZant’s future remains flexible. She admits she doesn’t know how long this journey will last but sees it as an exciting opportunity to continue competing on her terms.
“For now, it’s just about enjoying the experience,” she said. “It’s been fun, and I’m happy to be here.” Her decision reflects a shift from a relentless pursuit of titles to a more balanced approach to her career and life.
The Legacy of Paige VanZant
VanZant’s story is one of resilience, adaptability, and evolution. From her days electrifying UFC fans to her fearless foray into BKFC and Power Slap, she has continually redefined her place in the combat sports world.
While her MMA gloves might stay on the shelf, VanZant’s journey is far from over. Her fans continue to rally behind her, eagerly watching as she navigates this exciting new phase. Is this the final goodbye to MMA, or just another chapter in a storied career? Only time will tell.
