The NHL landscape has been shaken with notable injuries this week. From the Nashville Predators to the New York Islanders, here’s the latest on the status of key players and their impact on their respective teams.
Nashville Predators: O’Reilly Out Week-to-Week
Ryan O’Reilly, a cornerstone of the Predators’ offense, is sidelined week-to-week with a lower-body injury. The 33-year-old forward was injured during Nashville’s 3-2 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday, logging just 16:50 of ice time before being removed from the game.
O’Reilly, who ranks third on the team with 14 points (five goals, nine assists) in 26 games, has also been a standout in the faceoff circle. He leads the Predators with 453 faceoffs taken and boasts the second-best faceoff win rate on the team at 55.2% (minimum 10 faceoffs).
Head coach Andrew Brunette acknowledged the challenge of losing O’Reilly but saw an opportunity for other players to step up.”This is a chance for others to embrace bigger roles and contribute more to the team,” Brunette said after their 3-0 loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday.
Struggling at 31st place in the NHL standings with a record of 7-14-6, the Predators have lost six straight games (0-3-3), only ahead of the Chicago Blackhawks.
Tampa Bay Lightning: Kucherov’s Daily Status
Nikita Kucherov, the Lightning’s leading scorer, remains day-to-day with an undisclosed injury. The 31-year-old forward sustained the injury during Tampa Bay’s 3-2 victory over the Predators last Friday.
Despite returning to finish the game, Kucherov has since missed practice sessions and left Wednesday’s practice early. He has amassed an impressive 34 points (12 goals, 22 assists) in 22 games this season, underscoring his importance to the team.
Head coach Jon Cooper offered an update but provided little certainty: “We don’t have a positive update yet… We’re hopeful he’ll play during our West Coast trip.”
The Lightning are scheduled to face the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday. Additionally, forward Mitchell Chaffee, currently practicing in a non-contact jersey, is expected to travel with the team.
New York Islanders: Varlamov and Pelech Updates
Semyon Varlamov, the Islanders’ goaltender, missed Thursday’s 5-2 loss to the Seattle Kraken due to a lower-body injury. Although he served as the backup to Ilya Sorokin earlier in the week against the Canadiens, Varlamov’s status remains uncertain.
Goaltender Marcus Hogberg was called up on an emergency basis to act as Sorokin’s backup against Seattle. Head coach Lane Lambert described Varlamov’s condition as short-term and day-to-day: “We’ll see how things progress.”
Meanwhile, defenseman Adam Pelech made his return to practice Thursday for the first time since suffering a jaw injury during a 4-3 victory over the Sabres on November 1. Wearing a full-face shield, Pelech participated in non-contact drills. “It’s great to have him back. He’s an important player for us,” Lambert said.
Minnesota Wild: Zuccarello, Eriksson Ek, and Brodin Injuries
The Minnesota Wild are dealing with a trio of significant injuries. Forward Mats Zuccarello, defenseman Jonas Brodin, and forward Joel Eriksson Ek are all listed as week-to-week.
Zuccarello, sidelined for nine games with a lower-body injury, is currently on long-term injured reserve. He has begun light activity, and head coach John Hynes remains cautiously optimistic: “He’s progressed from doing almost nothing to light activity… We’ll know more next week about his timeline to return to the ice.”
Brodin has missed four consecutive games, while Eriksson Ek left Wednesday’s 3-2 overtime win against the Canucks due to an injury sustained during the game.
Forward Jakub Lauko is also recovering from a lower-body injury and has been out for four games.
Injuries are taking a toll across the NHL, affecting teams in key areas and creating challenges for coaches and players alike. As these teams navigate the loss of their stars, the focus shifts to recovery timelines and finding ways to adapt without their top performers. Fans will undoubtedly watch these developments closely as the season progresses.
