Scott Mattera has officially been named the 11th head coach of the Louisiana Tech volleyball team, as announced by Vice President and Athletic Director Ryan Ivey on Monday. This marks a significant turning point not only in Mattera’s career but also for the university’s volleyball program.
Before joining Louisiana Tech, Mattera had an impressive six-season tenure at Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) in San Antonio, Texas. During his time there, he built a solid legacy with a record of 113-42, including an outstanding 70-8 in conference play. Under his leadership, OLLU claimed four consecutive Red River Athletic Conference championships and two tournament titles.
On October 5, 2024, Mattera became the all-time winningest coach at OLLU when his team defeated Jarvis Christian University. Just a week later, he reached the milestone of 200 career wins with two victories over Louisiana Christian University. These accomplishments are a testament to his coaching talent and his ability to build strong teams.

Scott Mattera expressed his excitement about the opportunity at Louisiana Tech. “I’m thrilled to welcome Scott to Louisiana Tech and Ruston,” shared Ryan Ivey. “Their trust in me to connect with our players and build a championship culture both on and off the court means so much to me,” Mattera added.
Mattera emphasized the importance of fostering strong relationships with his players. He is committed to creating a positive culture where every team member feels valued and supported. This not only enhances team spirit but also promotes individual growth.

Beyond his success at OLLU, Mattera brings significant coaching experience from his time with the Alamo Volleyball Club, where he coached top 17 teams and led the setter training program. Over the past three seasons, his teams have produced 32 NCAA Division 1 athletes and qualified for national championship tournaments twice.
Before his tenure at OLLU, Mattera spent six seasons as head coach at Concordia University-Nebraska from 2012 to 2017. During his time there, he led the Bulldogs to their first-ever NAIA National Tournament appearance in 2015 and earned Great Plains Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors.

Scott Mattera began his coaching career as a top assistant coach at Montreat College in North Carolina. Under his guidance, the Cavaliers achieved a 25-14 record in 2011 and secured a spot in the NAIA National Tournament.
Before transitioning to college coaching, Mattera had a notable high school coaching career in Ohio. Starting in 2002, he served as the JV coach at St. Ursula Academy, amassing a record of 44-3 over two years and winning consecutive city championships.
After taking a year off to open Synergy Sports and Fitness, he returned as the head coach at Notre Dame Academy from 2005 to 2010. In his second season, his team ended St. Ursula’s 139-match winning streak and went on to win back-to-back city championships in 2007 and 2008.
