The Seattle Seahawks and quarterback Geno Smith got some positive updates following their disappointing 30-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night. Head coach Mike Macdonald shared on Monday that tests on Smith’s right knee revealed no serious injury. The coach remains hopeful that the veteran QB will suit up for the upcoming game against the Minnesota Vikings.
Geno Smith’s Status
“We’re fortunate,” said Macdonald. “The tests brought back a lot of positive, optimistic signs. Geno is a beast, man. He was in here this morning, working out, and active throughout practice. He’s still feeling it, but this guy is tough. We’re optimistic he’ll practice during the week and be ready to go for the game.”
Smith’s return would be a critical boost for the Seahawks, whose season has been a rollercoaster ride. Seattle came into Sunday’s matchup riding a four-game winning streak and sitting atop the NFC West but fell to Green Bay in a frustrating defeat that saw them lose their division lead.
Packers Dominate in All Phases
The Packers overwhelmed Seattle’s offense, sacking both Smith and backup QB Sam Howell seven times. Meanwhile, Green Bay’s offence exploited a Seattle defence that had been stellar during the win streak.
Adding to Seattle’s struggles, centre Olu Oluwatimi suffered an injury, further complicating the team’s preparations for the final stretch of the season.
“I think overall, you’ve got to give a lot of credit to Green Bay,” Macdonald said. “They out-coached us, and we didn’t have good enough plans in all three phases. That’s on me. Honestly, we didn’t execute well, and that’s not the way we’ve been playing to win games.”
What’s Working
The Seahawks’ special teams provided some bright spots.
- Punter Michael Dickson averaged an impressive 46.5 yards on six punts.
- Kicker Jason Myers nailed field goals from 48 and 45 yards, showcasing consistency.
What Needs Improvement
Oluwatimi’s injury was a significant blow to Seattle’s offensive line, with rookie Jalen Sundell stepping in as his replacement. Green Bay’s defense took full advantage, registering:
- Seven sacks (four on Howell, three on Smith)
- 12 quarterback hits
- 10 tackles for loss
The Seahawks’ ground game also stalled after a season-high performance from Zach Charbonnet the week before, when he rushed for 134 yards.
Stock Watch
Rising:
- Zach Charbonnet continued to shine, delivering a 24-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. He finished the game with 54 yards on eight carries, proving to be a strong replacement for the injured Kenneth Walker III.
Falling:
- Sam Howell struggled in his first outing as a Seahawk. The backup quarterback completed only 5 of 14 passes for 24 yards and threw a fourth-quarter interception that led to the Packers’ game-sealing touchdown.
- Howell’s performance may temper fan frustrations with Smith, who has thrown 13 interceptions this season but remains the team’s best option under center.
“I need to be better,” Howell admitted. “My job is to step in, perform, and help this team win, but I didn’t do that today. I’ll review the film, learn from it, and improve.”
Injuries
- Geno Smith: Left in the third quarter after taking a hit to his leg from Packers linebacker Edgerrin Cooper.
- Olu Oluwatimi: Sidelined with a quad and knee injury, currently in recovery.
Key Numbers
- 7 sacks: Green Bay dominated Seattle’s offensive line, recording seven sacks and 12 QB hits.
- 0 sacks: Seattle’s defence failed to generate pressure on Packers QB Jordan Love, registering no sacks.
Seattle faces another tough NFC North opponent the Minnesota Vikings. The Seahawks are looking to rebound after losses to both the Packers and the Lions. Securing a win will be critical to staying in playoff contention as the season winds down.
