The Pittsburgh Steelers have long been considered front-runners for acquiring former first-round pick Daniel Jones after his release from the New York Giants. But with his unexpected release now finalized, the question remains: are the Steelers still the favorite to land him?
Daniel Jones Released by the New York Giants
After a turbulent season with the New York Giants, Daniel Jones requested a fresh start, leading the team to release him shortly after announcing he would be benched for the remainder of the season. While Jones is expected to hit waivers, his $11.83 million contract for the remainder of the season could deter teams from claiming him. However, once he officially becomes a free agent, will the Pittsburgh Steelers still be the best landing spot for him?
Steelers’ Interest in Daniel Jones
ESPN’s Ben Solak recently highlighted the Pittsburgh Steelers as a possible destination for Jones, citing the team’s better offensive infrastructure compared to the Giants. Solak noted:
“I can see that future for Jones on a team with far better offensive infrastructure than he ever enjoyed with the Giants. I’ve heard the Jets mentioned, but I don’t really like how that feels. I’m also keeping my eyes on the Steelers (current running favorite), Titans, and Browns.”
Despite this, the Steelers‘ interest in Daniel Jones during the offseason has not fully materialized. Right now, they still face significant questions regarding their quarterback situation, particularly with the quarterbacks already on their roster.
What Does Daniel Jones’ Future Look Like in Pittsburgh?
The Steelers are focused on winning this season, with Russell Wilson slated to lead the team. While Jones could be an upgrade over Kyle Allen as a backup quarterback, he’s unlikely to sign with Pittsburgh to be a third-string player for the remainder of the season.
Many suggest that signing Jones would be a preparation move for next season, but the Steelers would then have to evaluate three quarterbacks without seeing them all in action. With Wilson expected to get more reps than rookie Fields, the situation at quarterback in Pittsburgh could become even more complicated.
Steelers’ Quarterback Plans for 2025 and Beyond
Although Daniel Jones presents an intriguing option, he is two years older than Fields and presents some of the same developmental challenges. With the Steelers currently 4-2 under Fields as their starter, it’s assumed Fields will be the next-in-line starter if the team moves on from Wilson in 2025.
The former top-10 pick, Daniel Jones, likely deserves another shot at a starting job in a better situation. However, it appears that situation may not be in Pittsburgh. Instead, the Steelers might be more inclined to give Russell Wilson another opportunity or focus on Fields for their starting quarterback role moving forward.
