“We Hope He Finishes His Career Here” – Phoenix Suns Owner on Kevin Durant’s Future

At 36 years old, Kevin Durant remains a cornerstone for the Phoenix Suns. However, with the latter stages of his career on the horizon, speculation has naturally surfaced about his long-term plans. Suns owner Mat Ishbia has made it clear that he envisions Durant retiring in a Suns jersey, even expecting him to sign a contract extension in the summer of 2025.

Ishbia’s Confidence in Durant’s Future

[Durant] loves being in Phoenix, we love having him,” Ishbia told ESPN. “He’s off to an amazing start this season — one of the MVP leaders — and we’re off to a very good start. We expect Kevin to sign an extension, be with us for the long term. We hope he finishes his career here in Phoenix.

Ishbia also pointed out that NBA rules prevented Durant from signing a two-year extension during the 2023 offseason. Instead, the expectation is to negotiate a new two-year, $120 million extension in 2025. This extension would keep Durant in Phoenix through the 2027-28 season, just before his 40th birthday.

“Kevin wants to be here. We want Kevin here,” Ishbia added. “There’s never been one grumbling of anything different.”

Durant’s Importance to the Suns

Durant joined the Suns in February 2023 as part of a blockbuster trade that saw Mikal Bridges, Cameron Johnson, and several first-round picks head to the Brooklyn Nets. The steep price underscored the franchise’s commitment to pairing Durant with Devin Booker, forming one of the league’s most dynamic duos.

So far, Durant has delivered. It appears the Suns-KD partnership will go on for a few more years. Before his recent calf injury, the Suns boasted an impressive 8-1 record with Durant on the court. His contributions have sparked MVP chatter, with averages of 25.8 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game this season.

Without Durant, however, the Suns have struggled, posting a dismal 1-5 record during his absence. This stark contrast highlights his invaluable impact on the team, both offensively and defensively.

Durant’s Legacy in Phoenix

Durant’s decision to bypass a one-year extension earlier this year likely positions him for a larger, long-term deal in 2025. By committing to Phoenix, Durant would solidify his role as the veteran leader of a franchise aiming for its first NBA championship.

If Ishbia’s vision comes to fruition, Durant will continue to build his legacy as a Sun while cementing his status as one of the most dominant players in NBA history. For Phoenix, keeping “Slim Reaper” in the fold through the remainder of his career could be the key to achieving their championship dreams. As the Suns navigate the 2024-25 season, all signs point to a lasting partnership between the franchise and Kevin Durant. For fans and the team alike, Durant’s potential extension in 2025 represents not just stability but a testament to his enduring greatness. Whether the Suns can capitalize on his brilliance with a championship banner remains to be seen, but it’s clear they’re all in for the long haul. Evidently, the Suns can’t wait to get him back.
