The Winnipeg Jets are breaking new ground in the NHL, becoming the first franchise to sign a Chinese-born player to a professional contract. The team announced the historic move on social media, confirming that Kevin He, an 18-year-old forward, has signed a three-year entry-level contract with the organization.
Kevin He’s Journey to the NHL
Born in Beijing, He was selected by the Jets in the fourth round of the 2024 NHL Draft. After being drafted, He expressed his excitement at Sphere Las Vegas, saying:
“It’s a dream come true. It’s incredible, a huge honor. I have a lot of fans texting me right before the draft, wishing me good luck and showing me support.”
He’s hockey career began in China, but his trajectory shifted dramatically at the age of 12 when he and his family moved to Toronto, Canada. There, He honed his skills and developed into a promising talent. Currently, he plays in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), where he continues to build his game in preparation for the NHL.
Why Winnipeg Prioritized Kevin He
The Jets made He a key target during the draft, with general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff stating:
“We felt strong enough that he wasn’t going to be there if we waited much longer. Fortunately, we found an opportunity to jump up and grab him.”
Cheveldayoff also praised He’s passion and dedication:
“When someone takes so much pride in their heritage and so much pride in their craft in the sport they want to be involved in, it says a lot about the person and the individual.”
The Jets see He’s signing as an opportunity to promote diversity and grow hockey’s global reach. While the potential story of his success is inspiring, Cheveldayoff emphasized that the team values He’s abilities and character above all else.
Jets’ Impressive NHL Season
While fans are excited about Kevin He’s journey, they’re equally thrilled with the Jets’ performance this season. Winnipeg sits first in the Western Conference with a stellar 22-9-1 record and 45 points.
The team’s offense has been a key factor in their success, leading the Western Conference with 117 goals scored. However, the Jets have faced recent challenges, losing five of their last 10 games.
The standout player for Winnipeg this season has been Kyle Connor, who leads the team with 38 points, including the most goals and the second-most assists on the roster.
What’s Next for Winnipeg
The Jets will aim to maintain their top spot in the Western Conference when they face the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday night at 10:30 PM Eastern. Fans will also keep an eye on Kevin He’s development as he continues his promising career, potentially paving the way for greater representation in the NHL.
This signing marks an exciting milestone not just for the Jets but for the broader hockey community as the sport expands its reach globally.
