Cadillac and General Motors Officially Joining Formula 1 in 2026

General Motors (GM) and its Cadillac brand have reached a preliminary agreement to become the 11th team in the FIA Formula 1 World Championship starting in 2026. This marks a significant breakthrough after the project was initially rejected earlier this year due to unmet commercial requirements.

A Landmark Announcement

The project was approved by the FIA last year, but GM’s commitment to becoming a future power unit supplier, a critical requirement, has now paved the way for its acceptance into Formula 1.

“We are honored to join the pinnacle of motorsport,” said GM Chairman Mark Reuss. “F1 demands exceptional innovation and excellence. This is a global stage for GM to showcase our engineering and technological expertise at an entirely new level.”

F1 and FIA Backing

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali expressed full support for the entry, highlighting the partnership’s importance for the sport’s growth: “General Motors and Cadillac’s commitment to this project is a significant and positive statement for our sport’s development. We look forward to seeing the progress of this entry as it moves closer to joining the grid in 2026.”

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing GM’s global influence: “General Motors is a major global brand and force in the OEM world. I fully support the efforts of the FIA, F1, GM, and the team to continue dialogue and move toward a final agreement for this entry.”

Strategic Partnership with Andretti Global

The team will operate under TWG Global, the parent company of Andretti Global. Mario Andretti, the 1978 F1 World Champion, will serve as a director on the board: “Formula 1 was my first love, and 70 years later, it remains my happy place. To still be involved at this stage of my life is a dream come true.”

As F1 continues to expand its presence in the U.S., welcoming a powerful American brand like GM/Cadillac brings tremendous value. The project exemplifies innovation and American excellence, aiming to deliver unforgettable moments for fans worldwide.
