Chris Paul Moves Into 2nd on NBA’s Career Assists List Against Pelicans

San Antonio Spurs point guard Chris Paul achieved a monumental milestone on Sunday, moving to second place on the NBA’s all-time assists list during a game against the New Orleans Pelicans, the team where his illustrious career began 20 years ago.

Paul Surpasses Jason Kidd with Historic Assist

The 39-year-old veteran notched his 12,092nd career assist, surpassing former Phoenix Suns and Dallas Mavericks star Jason Kidd. The historic moment came on a 3-pointer from rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama with 7:06 left in the first half.

Paul now trails only the legendary John Stockton, who holds the NBA’s career assists record with 15,806 assists accumulated over 19 seasons with the Utah Jazz.

A Remarkable 20-Year Journey

Chris Paul’s NBA journey began in 2005 when the New Orleans Hornets selected him as the fourth overall pick in the NBA Draft. He spent four seasons with the franchise before being traded to the Los Angeles Clippers, where he became a cornerstone player for six seasons. Over the years, Paul showcased his elite playmaking skills with stops in Houston, Oklahoma City, Phoenix, and Golden State, before signing with the San Antonio Spurs in the offseason.

This season, as a starter for the Spurs, Paul has averaged:

  • 10.4 points
  • 8.5 assists
  • 3.9 rebounds

Paul Reflects on His Achievement

Despite starting Sunday’s game without an assist in the opening quarter, Paul delivered three assists in the first five minutes of the second quarter, sealing his place in NBA history.

Reflecting on the accomplishment, Paul shared his disbelief and gratitude:

“Yeah, it is wild,” Paul said. “I mean, five years ago I had seen that number and it’s like, ‘Man, you going to play long enough to do that?’ Seriously. I mean, I remember being a rookie, looking up in Utah, seeing John Stockton all-time steals and assist leader. So, yeah, it is kind of crazy. I mean, I’m grateful for the opportunity to still continue to play.”

Paul’s Legacy Among the Greats

Chris Paul’s remarkable achievement not only highlights his longevity but also cements his legacy as one of the greatest point guards in NBA history. Known for his exceptional basketball IQ and court vision, Paul has been a pivotal figure in every franchise he’s played for, guiding teammates to success and setting an example for future generations of players.

As Paul continues to add to his totals, basketball fans around the world can celebrate the enduring excellence of a true NBA legend.
