In a thrilling game at Golden 1 Center, the San Antonio Spurs defeated the Sacramento Kings 127-125, despite a strong performance from DeMar DeRozan. The Spurs’ rookie sensation, Victor Wembanyama, recorded an impressive triple-double with 34 points, 13 rebounds, and 11 assists, leading San Antonio (11-9) to the victory.
Kings’ Early Dominance Fades
Sacramento (9-12) seemed in control early, building a 17-point lead in the first quarter. However, they struggled to maintain that advantage, allowing the Spurs to mount a comeback. DeRozan returned to action after missing two games due to back inflammation, contributing 28 points, five rebounds, and eight assists. Despite DeRozan’s efforts, Sacramento couldn’t hold onto their lead, especially in the second half.
Harrison Barnes Returns to Sacramento
A significant moment in the game came when Harrison Barnes, now with the Spurs, made his return to Golden 1 Center for the first time since the trade that brought DeRozan to Sacramento. Barnes received a standing ovation, with the Kings paying tribute to his six seasons in Sacramento. Kings head coach Mike Brown praised Barnes for his professionalism and leadership during his time with the team.
Sacramento went into halftime with a slim 65-58 lead. After their strong first-quarter performance, the Kings allowed the Spurs to close the gap, with Wembanyama leading the charge for San Antonio. DeRozan scored 18 points in the first half, while Wembanyama recorded 16 points and eight rebounds, setting the stage for a competitive second half.
Intense Second Half Battle
The game was tightly contested in the second half, with multiple ties and lead changes. In the fourth quarter, the Spurs took a 103-101 lead on a dunk by Wembanyama with 8:11 remaining. San Antonio then pushed the lead to 118-113 on a 3-pointer by Devin Vassell with 2:49 left. Despite a late 3-pointer by De’Aaron Fox cutting the deficit to two points, Chris Paul answered with a critical 3-pointer, sealing the Spurs’ win.
Looking Ahead
The Kings will look to bounce back when they host the Houston Rockets on Tuesday. Houston, coming off several strong wins, had been a tough opponent for Sacramento last season, sweeping the season series 3-0. The Kings will need to recover from their recent struggles to compete against a Rockets team averaging seven players in double figures this season.
