At UFC 309, Jon Jones made a dominant return after a 20-month layoff, defending his UFC heavyweight title with a knockout victory over Stipe Miocic. This marked his second win in the heavyweight division, following his move up from light heavyweight, where he had reigned for over a decade. While Jones holds the “undisputed” champion title according to the UFC, his age and limited activity have raised questions about whether he should truly be considered the top heavyweight.
In contrast, Tom Aspinall has been putting in the work, securing the interim heavyweight title at UFC 295 after a victory over Curtis Blaydes this past July. Aspinall’s win against Blaydes was especially important, as it avenged his only career loss—suffered due to an injury just 15 seconds into their first encounter. With an impressive 8-1 record in the UFC heavyweight division, Aspinall has consistently dominated top-tier opponents, proving his strength and reliability in the division.
Although Jon Jones is a legendary figure in MMA with an undefeated mystique, his recent career trajectory and performances don’t necessarily make him the current No. 1 heavyweight. At 37 years old, Jones has shown little interest in fighting other ranked contenders in the heavyweight division, especially someone like Aspinall. On the other hand, Aspinall’s record of 8-1 in the UFC and his wins over established fighters make a compelling case for him to be the top heavyweight. Aspinall’s willingness to compete and stay active contrasts sharply with Jones, whose future in the division seems uncertain.
While Jon Jones may hold the UFC’s heavyweight title, some would argue that he is not the true No. 1 heavyweight today. Aspinall’s impressive victories and consistent performance inside the octagon give him a strong claim to the top spot. As long as Jones, Aspinall, and Francis Ngannou remain active, the debate over who truly deserves the heavyweight crown will continue. Ideally, these top contenders will face off to settle the matter and determine who is truly the best in the division.
