The Kansas City Chiefs, currently boasting an impressive 11-1 record, are not cruising to easy victories. Instead, their narrow wins are providing a unique advantage, according to quarterback Patrick Mahomes. These tight games, though nerve-wracking, are keeping the team motivated and focused, a dynamic Mahomes believes will pay off in the long run.
Staying Hungry Through Close Contests
“It keeps you motivated, which I think can be a good thing in the end,” Mahomes explained when reflecting on the Chiefs’ nail-biting games this season. “I look back on the year we lost the Super Bowl [2020 season], and we were very dominant during the regular season. At some point, you start coasting because you’re winning games just by doing the normal thing.”
Drawing comparisons to last season, Mahomes added, “Last year, things didn’t always go the way we wanted during the regular season. But we worked hard every week, stayed sharp on the details, and ended up playing our best football at the end of the year. That’s the hope for this season—that these close games keep us hungry and push us to improve as the season goes on.”
Chiefs’ Record-Breaking Start
Tied with the Detroit Lions for the best record in the NFL, the Chiefs’ 11-1 performance has been remarkable, even if many of their victories have come down to the wire. Six of their wins were decided on the last play or two, underscoring the team’s resilience under pressure.
Their most recent victory, a narrow 19-17 win against the Las Vegas Raiders, came in dramatic fashion. The Raiders, on the edge of field goal range, fumbled in the game’s final moments, allowing Kansas City to escape with the win.
Offensive Improvements and Room to Grow
Mahomes acknowledged the offense’s progress but stressed the need for improvement in critical moments. “We’ve done better at executing plays and getting to the right spots,” Mahomes said. “I’ve been giving guys more opportunities to make plays, but there are still little moments—missed deep shots or red zone miscues—that hold us back.”
He emphasized that eliminating these mistakes could lead to even more dominant performances: “If we just make those plays, we’re scoring 30 points a game, and we’re not even having this discussion.”
Challenges on the Offensive Line
One ongoing challenge for the Chiefs has been instability at left tackle. Mahomes has been sacked five times in each of the past two games, leading to lineup changes. Against the Raiders, starting left tackle Wanya Morris was benched, following a similar move earlier with rookie Kingsley Suamataia.
Last week, the team signed veteran tackle D.J. Humphries, who is expected to start against the Los Angeles Chargers if ready. Despite the turnover, Mahomes remains confident in his offensive line.
“I’ve played with all those guys before, and I know they’re out there battling,” Mahomes said. “I focus on my process and stay within the scheme of the offense. When things break down, I just try to make plays.”
Red Zone Frustration
Mahomes showed visible frustration after a fourth-quarter sack against the Raiders during a critical red zone opportunity. Shortly afterward, guard Joe Thuney replaced Morris at left tackle.
Mahomes clarified that his frustration wasn’t directed at the coaching staff or his teammates. “I was upset because I felt like there were people open, and we hadn’t scored in the red zone,” he said. “That was a big drive, and we didn’t execute at the level we needed to.”
Focused on the Long Game
While the Chiefs’ close-game trend has its drawbacks, Mahomes sees it as an opportunity to refine their play and maintain intensity. “These tight finishes keep us focused and motivated,” he said. “We’re getting wins while staying hungry, and that’s the key to building momentum for the playoffs.”
As the Chiefs prepare for their next matchup against the Chargers, they’ll look to solidify their offensive performance and build on their reputation as a team that thrives under pressure. For Mahomes and his squad, the ultimate goal is clear: to peak at the right time and bring home another Super Bowl title.
The Chiefs’ season has been anything but predictable, with one-score games becoming the norm. However, these challenges are sharpening their edge. With Patrick Mahomes leading the charge and a focus on constant improvement, Kansas City appears poised to turn these narrow victories into the foundation of another championship run.
