Anthony Stolarz Day-to-Day for Maple Leafs Due to Lower-Body Injury
Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Anthony Stolarz is currently listed as day-to-day after suffering a lower-body injury during the first period of a 3-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday at Scotiabank Arena. Stolarz, who made seven saves on eight shots before leaving the game, was replaced by Joseph Woll in the second period.
The team has provided positive news about Stolarz’s condition, with head coach Craig Berube confirming that the goaltender is not expected to be sidelined long-term. “It’s good news overall,” Berube stated. “He didn’t go on the ice today, but we’ll see tomorrow how he progresses. We’re hoping he can get back out there soon.” The coach mentioned that while Stolarz might be able to return to action next week, his availability will depend on his progress over the weekend.
Stolarz has had an outstanding season so far, with a 9-5-2 record in 17 games. His .927 save percentage currently leads the NHL among goalies with at least 10 games played, while his 2.15 goals-against average ranks second behind Connor Hellebuyck of the Winnipeg Jets. Stolarz, a member of the Stanley Cup-winning Florida Panthers last season, signed a two-year, $5 million contract with the Leafs in the off-season, adding depth to their goaltending lineup.
In response to the injury, the Maple Leafs have called up Dennis Hildeby from their AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies. Hildeby has played limited time in the NHL this season, with an .869 save percentage in two games. He has also posted an .897 save percentage in six games for the Marlies. It is yet to be determined whether Hildeby will start either of the upcoming back-to-back games, which include a Saturday night clash against the Detroit Red Wings and a Sunday afternoon home game against the Buffalo Sabres.
Meanwhile, Joseph Woll continues to impress in relief. Woll, who secured the win on Thursday with 19 saves, holds a 10-8-3 record, a 2.16 GAA, and a .921 save percentage this season. He has been solid for the Leafs, stepping up when needed and maintaining a high level of play.
Additionally, forward Bobby McMann is expected to make his return to the lineup against the Red Wings. McMann, who has contributed seven points (six goals, one assist) in 21 games this season, has been sidelined for seven games due to a lower-body injury sustained in late November. McMann expressed that he feels ready to go after taking time to recover. During practice, McMann skated alongside Fraser Minten and Max Domi, which likely means forward Ryan Reaves will be scratched for the upcoming games.
As the Leafs prepare for a crucial stretch of games, the team will be hoping for Stolarz’s swift recovery. If he continues to improve, he could return to action soon, bolstering Toronto’s goaltending depth. For now, Woll and Hildeby will share the workload while the team awaits updates on Stolarz’s condition. With the Leafs holding an 18-9-2 record, they will look to maintain their strong play and secure crucial points in the standings with Stolarz’s absence being as brief as possible.
