Gianpiero Lambiase, Max Verstappen’s race engineer at Red Bull Racing, has shed light on what sets the four-time Formula 1 champion apart. Verstappen secured his fourth consecutive world title at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, navigating the challenges of the occasionally temperamental RB20. Lambiase, who often exchanges intense radio communications with Verstappen, offered insight into their dynamic, explaining that the high-pressure moments during races reveal a different side of the Dutchman.
“What you hear on the broadcast isn’t necessarily Max as a person but rather the adrenaline he’s experiencing,” Lambiase told Sky Sports. “Despite how he may come across, he always absorbs the information given to him. That’s his real strength—he processes everything and consistently makes the right decisions.”
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the collective effort behind Verstappen’s achievements. “Max wouldn’t have accomplished this without the support of the team, both in the garage and at the factory,” Horner said. “The relationship between the driver, the engineer, and the entire team is what makes results like this possible.”
Lambiase also compared this season to the intense 2021 championship battle, highlighting Verstappen’s evolution. “He’s taken another step forward this year, which is hard to believe,” Lambiase noted. “His dedication in the office, with the crew, and even his respect for other drivers have been remarkable. He doesn’t need to win every single weekend to prove himself.”
With four F1 titles to his name, Verstappen now matches the achievements of Red Bull’s former champion, Sebastian Vettel. Horner reflected on the significance of this milestone: “When we achieved it with Seb, I thought we’d never replicate that success. Standing here now with Max after four titles, it’s incredible. He’s firmly established among the all-time greats.”
Describing Verstappen’s unique qualities, Horner praised his natural talent and relentless drive. “His innate ability, coupled with unmatched determination and confidence, has created one of the finest racing drivers I’ve ever seen,” he said.
Despite internal challenges within the Red Bull camp, Verstappen has emerged as the team’s undeniable leader. Horner credited Verstappen’s unwavering commitment, saying, “Every time he gets in the car, he delivers 110%. His consistency and focus this year have been truly inspirational.”
Horner concluded by highlighting the difficulty of the 2024 season: “This was Max’s toughest and best championship yet. Even on challenging days, he showed maturity and delivered results. This victory belongs not only to Max but also to the dedicated team in Milton Keynes who faced relentless pressure from competitors.”
